Man is inclined to sin, and without grace from God, he will not be able to break free from slavery to sin. Once and for all God gave us His Only-begotten Son to free us from the bondage of sin, at a very high price, His very own life.

God has written in our hearts his moral law so that we will be reminded when we sin. God knows our weakness as we inherited lust to sin in our human nature. We have the inclination to fall into sin, letting our own self-will dominate rather than God’s will. “Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (1 John 3:4)

The truth is that sin originates from a heart that does not love God and desires anything above God. Romans 8:7, “The mind of flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.” Desires gave way to sin and sin, death. We have to examine the roots of sin so we will be able to overcome the desire to sin. “Above all else, we have to guard our heart. The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” Jeremiah 17:9

Jesus exhorted us to understand that we are defiled from what comes from our heart.  Mark 7:21-23: “For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

How can we uproot the sins that come from our heart? It is summed up in Ephesians 4:22-32.

  1. Be holyRepent of your sins and make the decision to amend your life. “Get rid of the old self, put on the new self, which is created in God’s likeness.” Confess your sins, and God will be faithful to forgive you and cleanse you of your sinfulness. “Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil.” Isaiah 1:16 “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” Colossians 3:5
  2. Obey God’s commandmentsLove God above all and others also, keeping in mind that sin is always disobedience. Jesus said: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
  3. Be instructed of the truthRead the Scriptures. Live the teachings in your life. “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”  Ephesians 6:7
  4. Pray always in the SpiritPraying in the Spirit will empower you as the Spirit will work and convict the man of perdition, who is Satan. Pray unceasingly, and call on the Lord Jesus Christ for grace at all times. If you are faithful to the end, you will share in what belongs to Christ.
