Obedience is our sacred duty to comply with the will of God over our own. Obedience to God is important because God requires it from us to repent of our disobedience so we can be saved. We give all due honor to God from whom comes all the power. Every Christian should know that God is to be obeyed in all things while human authorities are to be obeyed in certain things. We may draw from the following reasons the importance of being obedient to God. 1. Obedience draws us closer to God When we obey God we are in fellowship with Him. We are His friends and enjoy His intimacy and providence. He loves those who obey Him and is generous with His gifts. 2. Obedience is an act of love We love God because He first loved us. John 14:21: “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and [a]manifest Myself to him.” 3. We gain everlasting life “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.” (John 3: 36) Jesus is an example of obedience, and all those who obey him find salvation. Jesus affirmed that if we do this commandment, “to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength”, we will live. 4. Obedience obtains God’s promise If we obey God, whatever we ask in the name of His Son Jesus, He will grant it. We have faith and hope that in heaven we will receive fullness of life, joy, peace, and union with God. 5. God makes us His own special treasure If we obey God, He will make us his treasured possession. We become his chosen people; his children by adoption in Christ Jesus. 6. We are blessed because we obeyed When we obey God we will be blessed along with our children and the generations after. We will enjoy wealth and riches in our house. 7. We learn the virtue of humility When we obey, we cease being selfish and become selfless. We learn the virtue of humility from Jesus who was obedient unto his death. 8. God gives us wisdom The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. (Psalm 111:10) We will know God’s plan and be directed to do what is right, worthy and just. 9. Obedience is faith in action We believe in God and in the One he sent. Faith is a grace that makes us taste eternal life and is necessary for our salvation. Obedience to God’s will means renunciation of our own will. 10. Obedience is an act of servanthood The Old Testament prophets and, above all, Jesus showed us that obedience is servanthood. Like them, we willingly offer ourselves to God’s purpose for our lives.
