A famous quotation, “My heart is restless until it rests in Thee, O Lord.” is a cry of the heart. We have that longing inside of us for our Creator, to crave for union with Him. It may be attributed to our being made in His image and likeness. God gave His life that we may have it to the full. However, due to the first man’s willful disobedience, we inherited the sin and are separated from God. We cease to have that beatific vision of seeing God face to face and hearing Him speak to us, just as He spoke to Adam and Eve. But God did not abandon them. His plan to bring them and mankind back to Him has found fulfillment in the Word He gave to His prophets, to guide mankind on their journey back go Him, and in the incarnation of His Only Son, Jesus Christ, whom He sent to save man from his sins and redeem him.
God foreknew us even before we were born. Psalm 139:13-16: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
God knows our yearning, our need for love and our helplessness. He gave us His Son, Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Christ shows us the way back, the truth about our inheritance as adopted sons and daughters of God through Him and from Whom we gain back eternal life. John 17:3: “Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only TRUE God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.”
In His great love for us, He gave us His life that we may live. Man is called to a fullness of life that far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God. We are made for union with God. He has put a void in our heart that can only be filled by God and made complete only with God in it. He filled us with His Spirit of Love so He can dwell in us and made partakers of eternal life. We are made to love God and our neighbor.
God continues to pursue us even if we separate ourselves from Him. He awaits our return with great patience, mercy and love. He makes available His Word as food for our soul and His Body and Blood as food for our body. He fills the desire of the Christian heart with His presence. God will always give the desires of our heart if it is meant for our good. God promises to us that if we delight in Him, He shall give us the desire of our heart. He will only give it if we obey His will and submit to Him in service and in truth.
